Meeting planners don’t always have time to
get away for a site visit, but with new virtual-reality technologies they don’t necessarily
need to. The Orange County Convention Center’s (OCCC) all-new website allows meeting
planners to virtually visit the facility and plan
out their meetings without having to leave
The OCCC is the first convention center to
use atlas3D’s MapSpacer technology for its
clients, allowing planners to take virtual-real-
ity-enabled tours, map out their event using
detailed 3D models and floor plans, as well as
narrow down meeting spaces according to
their exact specifications. The SketchUp tool
even allows users to custom design spaces,
incorporate the OCCC’s inventory of equip-
ment and furniture, and then submit the plan
for a cost breakdown.
This new tool makes designing event
layouts within blank-canvas spaces like the
OCCC’s new Destination Lounge a breeze.
The 7,000-square-foot multipurpose space
in the South Concourse can be used for
everything from a staff headquarters to a
VIP lounge for sponsors and exhibitors or a
networking space for attendees. Equipped
with video walls, LED display systems, and
lighting to support corporate branding and
displays, Room S222 is comfortable, high-
tech, and easy to customize.
As part of its ongoing Capital Improvement Program, the OCCC has recently
checked off a number of facility upgrades,
and even more are in the pipeline. The International Drive Pedestrian Bridge will open
this summer, creating an easier way for
pedestrians to walk from the OCCC’s West
Building to the Hyatt Regency Orlando without having to cross busy International Drive.
Other recent improvements include the
addition of new wayfinding digital signage
throughout the lobbies of the North/South
Building, along with a new OSHA-certified
fall-arrest system for the roof, for safer rigging, which will be completed by October.
The West Building will also receive a new roof
by the end of 2019.
